NYE revellers told to stay safe

Revellers in the North West are being urged by emergency services to stay safe and act responsibly on New Years Eve.

To cut alcohol-related violence Merseyside Police will have high visibility patrols around nightspots.

Police warned �80 fines would be issued to people misbehaving or a night in a police cell.

Meanwhile, North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) has asked people to use 999 responsibly and only for emergencies.

NWAS medical director Kevin Mackway-Jones said: "There is an increase in the number of drink-related calls to the ambulance service at this time of the year and the people of the North West are urged to take a sensible and moderate approach to celebrating to reduce the risk of becoming another 'statistic'."

Those suffering the after effects of a night out should get rest at home and go to a pharmacy if necessary but not to GPs or hospitals, said NWAS.

Police too have told part-goers to drink responsibly to prevent accidents or violence on New Years Eve.

Liverpool north area commander, Steve Watson said: "We don't want to stop people having a good time over New Year, far from it."

Lancashire Police issued a similar message : "We want to engage with people who are out having a good time to remind them of the importance of safe and sensible drinking and to remind them of the potential situations that they can get themselves in if they drink too much."
