Cyclists warned to wear helmets

Cyclists in the Bristol area are being encouraged to wear helmets and to display the correct lights as part of a winter safety campaign by police.

Avon and Somerset Police want to reduce the amount of serious road traffic collisions involving bicycles.

The police will also be running Cycle Safe road shows about safe cycling, how to avoid bike theft and can also offer advice on bike maintenance.

The campaign is focusing on the Nailsea and Backwell areas.

'Seriously injured'

Michael Lawrence, an experienced cyclist and time trial racer, from Portishead, said it was impossible to predict everyone else's actions on the road.

He said: ""Unfortunately, I was recently involved in a collision with a motorist whilst riding my bike, which resulted in me falling on to my head.

"If I hadn't being wearing my helmet I would have been seriously injured".

PC Paul Morris, of Avon and Somerset police, said: "Cycling is a healthy, economical and environmentally-friendly method of transport but wearing the correct kit whilst riding your bicycle is vital."

The Cycle Safe road shows will be in Nailsea Precinct on 13 December and 16 December between 1000 and 1400 GMT.
