The park authority wants to reduce carbon emissions

About 50 locations in the Lake District are to be considered as sites for a small hydro-electric power station.

The Lake District National Park Authority wants to reduce carbon emissions in the region and produce greener energy for communities.

Kendal-based Inter Hydro Technology Ltd will spend the next two months carrying out feasibility studies into potential sites for the electricity power plant.

It will consider sites near villages or small residential developments.

Carissa Lough, spokeswoman for the Lake District National Park Authority, said: "With its significant water resources, the district has a history of using hydro power for traditional industries such as mills.

"Now with increasing energy costs, and with national and local directives to address climate change, it's hoped there will be increasing interest from land owners and local communities to develop hydro systems."
