Comedy double act set in bronze

The Laurel and Hardy statue is in Ulverston town centre

A bronze statue of Laurel and Hardy is being installed in the Cumbrian town where one of the comic duo was born.

The figure will be placed outside the Coronation Hall theatre in Ulverston where the couple made a famous public appearance in 1947.

Fundraisers spent 10 years raising £60,000 for the sculpture which was created by the maker of the famous Eric Morecambe statue, Graham Ibbson.

The tribute to Ulverston-born Laurel will be unveiled on 19 April.

A special ceremony will feature live entertainment including acts from comedian Ken Dodd and a Laurel and Hardy lookalike duo.

The statue is part of a £500,000 regeneration project to attract visitors to Ulverston.

Peter Mearns, executive director of North West development agency, said: "Ulverston has a unique selling point in being the birthplace of such a legendary star, and I'm sure the statue will be a wonderful tribute."
