March against gun crime in city

Marchers said they wanted to reach out to young people involved in gangs

A march against gun crime has taken place in Derby, following the fatal shooting of a teenager last year.

The protest was organised by the Men of Black Ancestry group and saw 100 men, including professionals from all backgrounds, take part on Saturday.

Organisers said the aim was to show young people involved in gangs "there are alternatives" to their lifestyle.

Kadeem Blackwood, 15, died in November after being shot in the Sunnyhill area. A teenager from Derby admitted murder.

Lynton Douc, of the Men of Black Ancestry group, said: "The main issue is the rise in gang activities and the cause of that.

"We see that we are responsible as men to reach out to youngsters and try to come up with alternatives as to how they are living their lives.

"The march included everyone in the community and went past some areas quite prominent for gang crime.

"We're normal working guys. We're asking the youths to look at us and see if we can get there so can they."
