Engineers from a Gloucestershire firm have travelled to Cumbria to help construct temporary bridges in the flood-hit county. Mabey and Johnson Ltd of Lydney make pre-fabricated bridges. Alex Smale, the firm's UK Director, told the BBC: "Our engineers are working closely with the local authority, looking at various options. "We have done a lot of work with disaster relief around the world, but fortunately not normally in the UK." Pre-fabricated Bailey Bridges were invented by Sir Donald Bailey in 1941, as a means of rapidly constructing bridgeheads for military operations in WW II. Mabey and Johnson have been involved in their manufacture for 35 years. Mr Smale said the firm's bridges may be deployed at various sites in Cumbria, although damaged approach roads and existing bridge sub-structure complicated the building of temporary bridges.
