Frogs find refuge in gardens and urban green spaces

Residents in Hull are being asked to be on the lookout for frogs, toads, newts and hedgehogs in their gardens as part of a wildlife survey. Slime and Spine 2009 is being led by a team of scientists at York university and aims to encourage people to explore their local environment. Homeowners in Marfleet will receive a postcard from next week asking them to report any sightings of the creatures. The results will help scientists draw up conservation measures. Researcher Sal Hobbs said: "As our towns grow, some species find refuge in gardens and urban green spaces, particularly animals such as frogs and hedgehogs. "But we know relatively little about how they are using these habitats and what features are important to them."
