Policeman loses payout challenge

A decision to revoke compensation awarded to a London policeman over a claim of victimisation has been upheld by the Court of Appeal.

Det Sgt Gurpal Virdi claimed he suffered discrimination when applying for promotion in 2005.

He was awarded �70,000 compensation in June 2008 but the decision was overturned after an appeal by the Met.

In August 2000, Det Sgt Virdi was awarded �240,000 after winning a race discrimination case against the Met.

The 49-year-old has three further employment tribunal cases pending against his employers.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the force was "pleased" but added that it was "disappointed" that the case had been brought.

He added that Det Sgt Virdi "is and remains a valued officer of the Metropolitan Police".

Det Sgt Virdi's successful tribunal claim in 2000 came after he was wrongly accused of sending racist hate mail to black and Asian officers at Hanwell police station, west London.
