Mayor unveils new cycling schemes

Initiatives designed to boost cycling in the capital have been unveiled by the mayor of London.

The Freewheel event, which enables Londoners to cycle past iconic sites on a car-free route, is to be improved.

Meanwhile the Tour of Britain cycling race is coming back to the capital and a new scheme of 'cycle challenges' is also going to be introduced.

Cycle journeys in London have gone up by 107% since the inception of Transport for London in 2000.

London Mayor Boris Johnson said: "Cycling is on the up in London, but there is still much to do if we want to really revolutionise the way that Londoners get about.

"That's why we are making record investments in cycling, developing the cycle highways and cycle hire schemes, and unveiling a summer schedule stuffed full of biking events, competitions, and campaigns designed to boost cycling across London's boroughs."

According to the mayor's office, £111m is being invested in cycling which includes funding for cycle hire and cycle highway schemes.

Work is continuing on delivering the central London cycle hire scheme and 12 cycle highways by 2012.
