UCL named 'world's fourth best'

University College London has gained three places in the rankings

University College London has beaten Oxford to be named the fourth best educational institute in the world.

The university has climbed three places since 2008 in The Times Higher Education Magazine's annual list.

Imperial College London came in fifth along with Oxford. London School of Economics was rated as the top specialist social science university.

The city institutes were beaten by Harvard at number one, followed by Cambridge and then Yale University.

'Meteoric rise'

King's College London came in at 23, dropping one place since 2008.

Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education magazine, said: "UCL's rise up the world rankings can truly be described as meteoric - year after year we have watched it climb up the top 30 - and it has now earned its place as number four in the world, above global super-brands like the University of Oxford, Imperial College London and Princeton University in the US."

Professor Malcolm Grant, president and provost at UCL said: "We are pleased by UCL's spectacular progression up the tables in recent years, because it does reflect the truly outstanding quality of UCL's community of academics and of our students from around the world."

London School of Economics received the top ranking in a special category which has been created to rate specialist institutions.
