Workmen dig 300,000 holes each year in London, according to TfL

A new permit scheme to reduce disruption for road users has been introduced in London. Utility companies must receive permits from Transport for London (TfL) or one of 16 London boroughs before digging up roads under their jurisdiction. The scheme, introduced by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, will co-ordinate work so utilities avoid digging up the same area twice. According to TfL, utility companies dig up 300,000 holes in London each year.
