A Muslim community in Oldham has started a campaign called "Not in Our Name" in a bid to distance themselves from extremists.
The group said it felt the religion had been demonised by some who have used terrorism to express their views.
Fazal Rahim, of Oldham Interfaith Council, said: "We have to distance ourselves from all acts of terrorism."
He added that the Muslim community should unite and work together to stop violent extremism.
