Fears for jobs at biscuit company

Union leaders are calling for talks with United Biscuits bosses over plans to move 125 jobs from its Liverpool factory to India.

Unite has said the firm, which owns the McVitie's and Jacob's brands, is considering moving the jobs abroad as part of a restructuring programme.

Debbie Brannan, from the union, said the firm had made "healthy profits" last year and staff must be rewarded.

A spokesman for United Biscuits said no decisions had yet been made.

'Urgent meeting'

Ms Brannan said: "The decision by United Biscuits to look into off-shoring possibilities and visit these sites in India comes at a bad time for all.

"But for our members at the Liverpool site this is an especially worrying development.

"We will do everything we can to make sure these jobs are not off-shored to India.

"We will be seeking an urgent meeting with the company to discuss their proposals."

United Biscuits said it constantly reviewed operations to ensure they "support the business in delivering sustainable growth and consumer value".

It added no decisions had been made about any restructuring programmes.

About 750 people are employed at the Aintree site, where Jacob's biscuits are produced.
