A man has been arrested over the death of a teenager murdered 26 years ago, whose case was the first ever featured on BBC One's Crimewatch programme.

Colette Aram, 16, was walking to her boyfriend's house in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire, on 30 October 1983 when she was abducted.

Her body was later found in a field close to her home. She had been raped and strangled.

Police said a 50-year-old local man had been arrested and was being questioned.

Last sighting

Colette, a trainee hairdresser, set off from her parents' house in Normanton Lane to walk the 20-minute route to the home in Willow Brook of her boyfriend at about 2000 GMT.

At about 2010 GMT she turned into Nicker Hill and stopped to talk to a group of friends. This was the last known sighting of her.

Her body was found at 0900 GMT the following day by police officers in a field off Thurlby Lane.

During the case, detectives developed a DNA profile of the killer after items recovered during the inquiry were re-examined.

Hundreds of officers worked on the case after the teenager's body was found just over a mile from where she disappeared.

Following the DNA breakthrough, police have used it to eliminate about 800 suspects.

Nottinghamshire Police began a publicity campaign - with leaflets delivered to 15,000 homes - last October, on the 25th anniversary of her murder.

This also saw a new Crimewatch appeal, which officers said brought a number of lines of enquiry forward.
