Campaigners failed to stop the University's new animal lab

A 65,000 signature petition is set to be handed in to Oxford University calling for the institution to stop tests on animals.

The signatures have been collected over five years by the group Speak.

Amanda Richards from Speak said: "We're hoping the university will take notice at the amount of opposition to the experiments they do."

The group was formed to oppose the University's biomedical sciences centre that opened in November 2008.

"We were hoping to either get the building stopped, or get it changed to a cutting edge lab looking at alternatives [to animal testing]", said Ms Richards..

"The new lab means we can now concentrate on all animals being tested on at Oxford University, and not just the new building."

Ms Richards said the petition will be handed in at the University administration building rather than the new lab because of an injunction preventing the campaigners from trespassing on University property.
