Council meetings' online showcase
County councillors in Shropshire are to star in their own online webcasts.

The council says it will be the first authority in the West Midlands to broadcast its meetings and other events on the internet.

Residents will be able to view the webcasts on the council's website from the summer.

The 12-month pilot project aims to improve communication between the council and people living in the county's communities.

'Live feedback'

It is being paid for by a government grant and will enable the council to decide whether the technology should be introduced permanently.

Councillor Phil Box, cabinet member for e-governance, said: "The council is a democratic body accountable to local people, but we have recognised that not everyone can attend council meetings or consultation events.

"Webcasting is one way the council can involve everyone in the democratic process."

Paul Masterman, head of communications and corporate policy, said: "The council wants to be as open and accessible as possible. It is important people know what is going on and have different opportunities to tell us what they think.

"Webcasting will also allow us to take live feedback from viewers via email, allowing people an input into the democratic process."
