Royal Mail said the service needs to be modernised
Postal workers at delivery offices in Stoke-on-Trent have taken part in a 24-hour strike in a dispute over pay and conditions.
The Communication Workers Union (CWU) accused Royal Mail of not negotiating over job cuts and modernisation despite workers' concerns.
Royal Mail said decreasing mail usage made change necessary.
The CWU said the strike, which began at 0500 BST, was expected to involve about 640 workers.
A series of walkouts was held at the same time in other parts of the country, and is expected to spread to other towns and cities on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
