Cadbury's Bournville factory in the 1880s

The Cadbury factory in Bournville was opened in 1879. By the late 1880s, the workforce had increased five-fold and ten years later, the factory was expanded.

Cadbury was a major employer of women. When they left to get married, the company gave them each a bible and a carnation as a gift.

By 1930, Cadbury had become the 24th largest manufacturing firm in Britain. The original 14-acre Bournville factory site had increased to 81 acres.

The well-being of employees was important to the Cadbury family. By the mid-1930s, more than 100 acres was devoted to recreation. Facilities included dressing areas, rest rooms and a concert hall.

The company celebrated its centenary in 1931 - 100 years after tea and coffee retailer John Cadbury switched to manufacturing cocoa.
