Morton to make directorial debut

Morton won a Golden Globe for her role in Myra Hindley drama Longford

Actress Samantha Morton is to make her directorial debut with a Channel 4 drama about a girl growing up in the British care system.

The Oscar-nominated star will build on her own experience of having spent time in a children's home.

She began writing the script herself but called in Tony Grisoni when it got "really complicated", she told the Media Guardian website.

It is thought the drama will air next May, with Morton playing a small part.

The 31-year-old said: "This film was originally about something else - the 1989 Children's Act, but it became too complicated.

"It was something I knew about because I was in care at that time. A lot of people write about what they know.

"That is how I have to develop my career as a director."

The cast has yet to be completed but filming will take place in Morton's home town of Nottingham.

The actress won a Golden Globe for her role in Channel 4's Myra Hindley drama Longford.

She has twice been nominated for an Oscar for In America in 2002, and Sweet and Lowdown in 1999.

Morton first came to the public's attention playing a teenage prostitute in TV series Band of Gold.
