NI Fujitsu staff to go on strike over job cuts

Staff at Japanese electronics firm Fujitsu's Northern Ireland offices are to stage six strikes over job cuts, a pay freeze and pension changes.

The strikes, part of UK-wide action, will begin this Friday. Further action will be taken on 7, 8, 11, 14 and 15 of January.

The company has two offices in Northern Ireland - in Belfast and Londonderry.

Earlier this year, the IT services unit of Fujitsu said it would cut up to 1,200 jobs in the UK.

It blamed the cuts on the economic downturn.

The union Unite said it was protesting against the cuts, a pay freeze imposed earlier this year and plans by the company to close the main final salary pension scheme to future staff.

Roger Dane, Unite representative for Fujitsu in NI, said: "While we remain ready and willing to talk at any time, this further rejection of the company's position leaves no doubt - our members saying enough is enough.

"We recognise the effect any industrial action will have on key private and public sector customers and clients of Fujitsu, but the responsibility for this rests squarely with the company for failing to address the issues."
