Scots earn crust in pie contest

The competition was looking for the best of the pie world across Britain

Scotland has taken four first places at the inaugural British Pie Awards in Melton Mowbray.

The 12 individual pie categories were being contested by 100 English and 20 Scottish bakers and butchers.

Scotland won the prestigious Savoury Hot Pie award, along with Best Football Pie, British Apple Pie and Fish Pie.

AJ Learmonth, from Jedburgh, won with their savoury pie, while MacDougall and Hastie, who supply Inverness Clachnacuddin, won best football pie.

The reigning World Scotch Pie Champion Paul Boyle, from Boghall in West Lothian, and two former winners were among Scotland's entrants.

Fife, Glasgow and Kilmarnock were also represented in the competition.

Pie varieties judged included Melton Mowbray, pork, steak and kidney, fish and vegetarian, British apple pies, dessert pies, pasties and "football pies".

The judges included chef Phil Vickery.

Alan Stuart, organiser of the World Scotch Pie Championship and owner of 19 shops in Fife, said: "Standards in Scotland have improved markedly since the start of the World Scotch Pie Championships 10 years ago."

The awards are intended to help protect and promote regional specialities and to recognise the craft of bakers and butchers, while supporting British produce.
