Reaction to the official correspondence between Westminster and the devolved Scottish government over the Lockerbie bomber.
ALEX SALMOND - SCOTTISH FIRST MINISTER
What we hope to achieve is perhaps to put to rest some of the dafter conspiracy theories we've seen, because what the documents demonstrate beyond any peradventure is that what we've said about this issue is validated by the correspondence.

DAVID CAMERON - CONSERVATIVE LEADER
Tonight the British government stands accused, and indeed the prime minister stands accused, of double dealing. On the one hand saying to the Americans they wanted Megrahi to die in prison but on the other hand saying privately to the Libyans that they wanted him released.

IAIN GRAY - SCOTTISH LABOUR LEADER
This was a decision for Scottish ministers. They made it. I've made clear I think it was the wrong decision and if it had been up to me Megrahi would not have gone back to Libya. But I do believe that Scottish ministers made the decision themselves.

NICK CLEGG - LIBERAL DEMOCRAT LEADER
The question remains cock-up or conspiracy? This was either a cock-up where, on an issue of major foreign policy implications, the London and Edinburgh governments were not speaking to each another. Or - more sinister still - someone in the British government gave a nod and a wink to the Libyan authorities to create the expectation on their part that Megrahi would be released from a Scottish prison. Either way we still need answers to these questions.

SIR MENZIES CAMPBELL - FORMER LEADER OF LIB DEMS
The idea that Kenny MacAskill would have responded willingly to any kind of suggestion from London, frankly, in my view, never was a starter, although it has had some support because of the speculation really which the government has allowed to run, not least because of the failure of the prime minister to make any public statement about these matters.

SUSAN COHEN - MOTHER OF LOCKERBIE VICTIM
It's so obvious that this was something that Blair wanted, that Straw wanted and whoever else wanted. He (Megrahi) was negotiable, he was a chess piece.

JOHN MOSEY - FATHER OF LOCKERBIE VICTIM
What we are forgetting is there were 270 people on that plane who have been killed and we have had no proper inquiry, no serious answers.
