Schoolgirl drank alcohol in class

The girl drank from a bottle of juice which had alcohol added to it

A Fife primary school pupil was suspended for three days after being caught drinking alcohol in class.

The primary seven pupil was sent home following the incident in Kirkcaldy.

Fife Council said the girl had drunk a small amount from a bottle of juice laced with alcohol but suffered no ill effects. No other pupils were involved.

The incident happened at Dunnikier Primary School last Tuesday. The council's drug and alcohol team have spoken to pupils since the incident.

The council's senior education manager Craig Munro said: "The school is treating this incident very seriously and the appropriate action has been taken.

"In addition, children have been spoken to by the council's drugs and alcohol team to raise awareness of the dangers of drink and drugs."

Judy Hamilton, Labour councillor for Kirkcaldy Central, said: "I think it's worrying that she's been able to get hold of this alcohol.

"It's probably natural for a child to be inquisitive, but it should have been kept out of harm's way.

"I think the school acted in the best interests of this child and the other children."
