Detectives investigating the theft of £600,000 worth of jewellery in Perth have revisited the scene of the crime in the hope of gaining further clues.

It is one week since the jewels were stolen from a salesman as he browsed through the books in an Oxfam shop.

Police believe a woman may have spotted the man showing his goods at a nearby jewellers and then followed him to the charity shop to steal his bag.

Detectives have been in the area trying to trace witnesses.

The 62-year-old salesman had been visiting Timothy Hardie jewellers last Tuesday afternoon.

He then stopped off at the Oxfam in South Street shortly before 1500 BST. He put the blue bag down on the shop floor and it was taken.

The female suspect was aged 20-25, about 5ft 2in tall, slim, and of "European appearance".

She had long, dark brown, wavy hair, which was tied in a pony tail.

A woman fitting her description was seen shortly afterwards with two men.

One of the men was seen running across South Street carrying a blue bag, with the woman following closely behind.

All three then got into a dark saloon car, possibly an old-style BMW.

Speaking ahead of the revisiting of the scene, Det Insp Mike Pirie, who is in charge of the investigation, said: ''We are studying hours of public and private CCTV coverage to try and identify any suspicious activity in the area that could assist in tracing those responsible.

''Our officers are also working closely with colleagues in other force areas to see if they can assist our inquiries. In addition, we have had a good response from members of the public who have contacted us to offer valuable details.

''However, we require more information, which is why we will have a high visibility presence by way of uniformed and detective officers in South Street where the theft happened.

"The hope is that our presence will help to jog people's memories and glean new information for the inquiry."
