In 2004, MI5 followed suspects in a major bomb plot. Two men who appeared on their radar were the future London suicide bombers Mohammad Sidique Khan (far right) and Shehzad Tanweer (second left).
Khan (second right) knew a man called Omar Khyam (far right). He was plotting his own bomb � but also encouraged Khan's own plan to fight in Afghanistan. Man on far left is Waheed Ali, not linked to 7/7.
Tanweer (left) and Khan (back to camera) had gone to Crawley in Sussex to seek Omar Khyam's advice. Khan had met Khyam in 2003 after he went out to Pakistan and joined a militant training camp.
On 2 February, surveillance officers followed Khan and Tanweer north. They took this picture and others at Toddington Services on the M1.
Khan was followed all the way to Leeds. But the security service says that it never knew his full identity and there was no intelligence of a bomb plot.
An MI5 bug was in Khyam's car and his flat. On one occasion, surveillance officers heard Khan asking about fraud and fighting overseas. Khyam told Khan that it was a "one-way ticket bruv".
