Venue licence revoked over noise

The Globe started life as a cinema in the early 1900s.

A promoter is to appeal after a council revoked the live music licence for one of Cardiff's top venues.

Cardiff council's licensing committee took the action against The Globe in Albany Road, Roath, after complaints from residents about noise levels.

The Globe, a former cinema dating back to 1914, reopened last year as a 300-seater music venue.

Alan Jones, a former member of 1960's chart toppers Amen Corner, is behind the scheme.

Mr Jones said he had spent thousands of pounds trying to insulate the building to prevent any noise pollution.

He said that work was continuing.

"It's proved to be a successful venture. It's an eclectic programme of music that appeals to everyone from 18 to 60. It's diverse in its appeal and has been trouble free," said Mr Jones.

"We've had two complainants, local residents, one at the front and one behind the venue," he added.

"We're undertaking the work to avoid the problem. Essentially, it's insulation for the building. We had hoped they would extend the time to allow us to finish."

A spokesperson for Cardiff Council confirmed that the licensing sub committee had revoked the licence last Friday at a meeting at City Hall.

Unwarranted intrusion

The spokesperson said: "The committee considered that in view of the evidence of statutory nuisance in respect of noise it was necessary to remove live music as a licensable activity from the premises licence".

"The sub committee would support live music venues in principle but must protect the public living in the vicinity of licensed premises from suffering unwarranted intrusion from noise nuisance".

The spokesperson was unable to say how the long the appeal to the city's magistrates would take.

Meanwhile, gigs at the Globe will continue until the appeal is heard, with acts including Wishbone Ash and Curved Air booked for concerts this autumn.
