Bedroom furniture sales sagged in Britain
|
Shares in furniture retailer MFI have slipped more than 6% after it reported a steeper-than-expected drop in sales at its core UK business.
Same store sales at MFI's UK store chain were down 7% in the 20 weeks to 15 May, compared to a year ago.
MFI said it had lost ground over the Easter period to rivals who spent more on advertising.
Total group sales were up 1% thanks to continued sales growth in France and at the Howden Joinery business.
Bedrooms and kitchens
MFI said it had experienced "challenging conditions" in the market for its bedroom furniture products in the UK.
It plans to introduce new ranges in an attempt to boost sales.
But Howden Joinery "continues to exceed expectations", the firm said, with same store sales up 20%.
And MFI's kitchens have proved popular in France. At Hygena Cuisines, its French retail business, same store sales were 16% higher compared with the same period a year ago.
