Wolverhampton & Dudley buys rival
Pints of beer
The pub industry continues to consolidate
Wolverhampton & Dudley, the UK's second largest regional pub operator and brewer is to buy rival Burtonwood for 119m ($229m).

The purchase follows W&D's purchase of Wizard Inns in June and comes amid a round of consolidation in the industry.

The maker of Marston's Pedigree ale, which operates 1,675 pubs, will gain another 460 sites in the latest deal.

The announcement came as W&D saw pre-tax, post exceptional profits rise 6.3% in the year to 2 October to 77.17m.

About 400 of the Burtonwood pubs will be operated by W&D's tenanted Union Pub Company.

The remainder will join its managed Pathfinder Pubs group, which include the Pitcher & Piano chain.

"Consolidation and cost pressures continue to be a feature of the industry," said W&D chief executive Ralph Findlay.
