Rising bills spark EDF sales jump

EDF and other energy firms have upped their prices
Gas and electricity price rises in the UK and Europe have bolstered sales at French energy firm Electricite de France (EDF).

Europe's biggest power company said sales in the first nine months of 2006 hit 42.76bn euros ($54.6bn; 28.8bn), from 35.47bn euros a year before.

Like its rivals, EDF has upped prices in the face of rising wholesale costs.

In July its five million UK customers saw gas bills rise by 19%, while electricity bills rose by 9.1%.

The integration of Italian firm Edison also boosted the French firm's performance, EDF said.
