Online accounts are hitting branches, the report says

The number of bank and building society branches has fallen by nearly 11% in the past five years, research suggests.
In 2002 there were 11,640 branches in the UK, but by 2007 the figure had fallen to 10,423.
The decline in branches increases to nearly 12% when branch numbers are considered in relation to population.
Numbers fell to an average of 2.13 branches to every 10,000 people in 2002, to just 1.88 per 10,000 this year, says website Locallife.com.
It says the closures are being hastened by the popularity of internet banking, as well as cost-cutting.
