RBS downbeat despite �15m profits

RBS, which is 70% taxpayer-owned, has reported £15m profits for the first half of 2009 - but has had to write off £1bn of bad debts.

Chief Executive Stephen Hester said the taxpayer would make a profit within five years - but "there will be no miracle cure. Things are not going to bounce back immediately".
