La Dolce Vita, 50 years and counting

It changed the direction of cinema, 50 years ago. Federico Fellini's, La Dolce Vita, a bitter-sweet view of late 1950's celebrity life in Rome, captured the mood of its time.

Gone was the stiff acting of post-war films, in its place came modern story lines and a mixture of fantasy and reality.

The Catholic Church was outraged and fighting even broke out at some of the premieres across Italy.

Duncan Kennedy looks back on La Dolce Vita.
