Hollywood star Patrick Swayze has died aged 57, after losing his battle with pancreatic cancer. The actor went on to star in US TV show The Beast after being diagnosed with the illness in January last year.
Among his earlier films, Swayze was part of the star-studded line-up in Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 gang movie The Outsiders. L-R Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, C Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Swayze and Tom Cruise.
Dirty Dancing would be the film to catapult Swayze to fame thanks to his classic line: "Nobody puts Baby in a corner". The star also performed and co-wrote the ballad She's Like the Wind for the soundtrack.
It was followed up with the 1989 action film Road House, in which Swayze played a bouncer at a rowdy bar opposite Kelly Lynch.
The 1990 film Ghost showed Swayze's sensitive side as a murdered man trying to communicate with his fiancee played by Demi Moore. It won two Oscars including best screenplay and supporting actress for Whoopi Goldberg.
Swayze earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role as drag queen Vida Boheme alongside Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo in 1995's road trip movie To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.
The actor was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1997.
In 2006 he made his West End debut in a production of Guys and Dolls alongside Claire Sweeney.
Off screen, Swayze had been in the process of turning his timber farm in New Mexico into a wildlife reserve. In January, he announced he was to write a memoir with his wife, Lisa Nemi.
