Internet fans flock to library

Nearly 4,000 people have used the free internet service

Islanders have taken advantage of a free internet service at Jersey Library.

It is a year since the library began its Open Learning Service, which provides free instruction on computing.

Since it opened, nearly 4,000 people have booked sessions on the library's computers to use e-mail, the internet or learn how to use a mouse.

Principal librarian Sharon Jones said many people had taken their first steps with information technology, or seized the opportunity to study the European Computer Driving Licence at their own pace.

She said users varied from Polish people keeping in touch with home, to those booking flights on the internet.

Two members of staff are on hand to help people and give instruction to those unfamiliar with computers.
