North Show horses go west
Horse
Foot-and-mouth restrictions stopped previous horse displays
The North Show is to reintroduce its horse section after a two-year absence.

The two-day equestrian display will take place on 16 and 17 of August at the Guernsey Riding and Hunt Club showground at Les Bordages.

The section was not held in 2001 and 2002 after it unfortunately fell foul of foot-and-mouth animal movement restrictions in 2001.

Now it is making a welcome return, with a new committee and new venue.

Practical location

The North Show is the third of Guernsey's annual trilogy of traditional summer agricultural shows.

The 2003 show will feature a modernised schedule, new format and several new classes.

They will include a Miniature Horse section and mountain and moorland jumping.

Most of the North Show's events are held in Saumarez Park in the parish of Catel.

However, the chairman of the Organising Committee, Barry Bartlett, said although the new venue will take the horse events further away from the main North Show site, he says it is a more practical location.

He said: "As someone has put it, 'the North Show has gone west', so to speak.

"But it's the perfect ground for it. We have all the facilities up there.

"It means we won't be moving showjumps from showground to showground, so the setting up will be a little bit easier."
