Island identity cards necessary
The decision to introduce compulsory identity cards in Guernsey could be made before the end of next year.

Politicians will need to give their backing before it can become law.

ID cards will provide details about a person's legal right to live in Guernsey and give access to services such as healthcare and benefits.

Mike Torode, Minister for the Home Department, believes Guernsey will have to introduce the system if the UK goes ahead with a national identity card.

Deputy Torode says it is important the island is not left behind.

The UK Government's plans have been strongly criticised by UK data protection watchdogs
