As many as 100,000 butterflies are thought to have arrived in Guernsey
|
Thousands of Painted Lady butterflies from north Africa have been arriving in Guernsey on their annual migration. Experts say as many as 100,000 of the butterflies have landed, making it the largest swarm of Painted Ladies the island has seen since 1996. The insects, which have orange, black and white-spotted wings, migrate to cooler climes in the summer to breed. In the autumn their descendants fly south to warmer climes and settle around the Atlas Mountains.
