Salmon poachers 'not tolerated'

Poaching threatens the future of salmon
The Manx government is warning salmon poachers that illegal fishing will not be tolerated on the island.

The Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry said poaching threatens the future survival of the fish.

The Manx Rivers Improvement Association will be checking for illegal poachers after the end of the season on Monday.

Anyone found handling, buying or in possession of illegally caught salmon will face prosecution, government officials have warned.

Freshwater Fisheries Manager for the government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, John Ballard said there are not vast numbers of fish returning to the island's rivers.

"It's very important that we protect the small number of fish that we've got," he said.

"If there is an increase in poacher activity that can seriously impact on the very future of the migratory fish that are returning to the island."
