Italian solider and explorer Umberto Nobile

Italian solider and explorer Umberto Nobile sits amid protective gear and feeds his pet dog 'Titina' during his ill-fated second airship expedition to the North Pole, late Spring or early Summer, 1928.

Nobile's airship 'Italia' crashed on pack ice during its return from the Pole, half of the crew survived to be picked up seven weeks after the initial crash.

Nobile and Titina were rescued by a Swedish aircraft on June 23.
