A special police officer carries a baby released from a school seized by heavily armed masked men and women in the town of Beslan in the province of North Ossetia near Chechnya, September 2004.

Russia is marking the fifth anniversary of the three day siege in which more than 330 people died after a school was seized by Chechen rebels. The rebels, who held more than 1,000 people hostage, demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya.
