Valued exposure: Beat Generation

Jack Kerouac

American novelist and poet Jack Kerouac died on this day, 21 October, in 1969. Best known as one of the symbols of the Beat Generation and he wrote his most famous novels, On the Road, in 20 days on a single 127ft-long scroll in 1951.

He is pictured here reading at the Seven Arts Cafe in New York, 1959.
