The Queen is undertaking a five-day visit to Australia in which she will open the Commonwealth Games. On Monday she visited Sydney after flying into Canberra on Sunday

A 2,000-strong crowd gathered at Sydney Opera House where the Queen officially opened the building's new western side

The Queen, who opened the Opera House in 1973, delivered a speech and unveiled a plaque to mark the launch of the building's renovations

Later, the royal tour moved to a Commonwealth Day service. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were joined by the Earl of Wessex

The service of song and prayer was held at St Andrew's Cathedral. The service's theme was health and vitality

Among those in attendance at the official Commonwealth Day service - the first to be held outside the UK - was Australian Prime Minister John Howard

Prince Philip took the opportunity to speak to assembled school children after the service

The Queen, who had recorded a Commonwealth Day message which was played to the congregation, delighted crowds after the service
