In pictures: Rothko exhibition

The first major exhibition dedicated to the later works of Mark Rothko (1903-1970) will open at Tate Modern on Friday.

It features more than 50 works, including paintings and works on paper, from the final part of Rothko's career between 1958 and 1970.

The exhibition brings together a group of 15 Seagram murals, commissioned in 1958 to adorn the exclusive Four Seasons restaurant in Manhattan's newly built Seagram building.

It also features Rothko's large-scale Brown on Gray works on paper, and works from his last series Black on Gray, made in 1969-70.

For the first time in their history the nine Tate Seagram murals will be joined by related Seagram paintings from the Kawamura Memorial Museum of Art, Japan, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

The exhibition is open to the public at Tate Modern, on London's South Bank, until 1 February 2009.
