In pictures: Gaza under siege

Israeli jets have bombed the Gaza Strip heavily for a second day, attacking supply tunnels on the Gaza-Egypt border. Israel wants to deliver a crushing blow to Hamas militants, who control Gaza.

Gaza's hospitals, already hit by an Israeli blockade, are now overwhelmed with casualties. Nearly 300 have died in the air raids, Palestinians say.

Meanwhile many Israelis in areas close to Gaza are sheltering in bunkers as rocket attacks on them from the territory continue.

Israeli special forces are deployed near the border with Gaza. Israel is calling up 6,500 army reservists and threatens a ground assault.

A government building, Gaza's main security complex, and the headquarters of a Hamas-owned satellite television channel were among the targets.

The high number of casualties made Saturday the single deadliest day in the Gaza Strip since Israel's occupation of the territory in 1967.

Most of those killed were members of Hamas, but women and children were also caught in the raids.

As the bombardment continued, the UN Security Council ended emergency talks with a call for an end to hostilities.
