North Korea has announced that it has put a satellite into orbit but US and South Korean officials later said the launch had failed.
TV reports in Pyongyang said the satellite was now transmitting data and revolutionary songs.
South Koreans watched the launch on TV. Western powers say it was a cover for a long-range missile test.
News of the launch triggered angry demonstrations in the South Korean capital, Seoul...
...and in Tokyo, where a right-wing group raised Japanese flags.
Family members of Japanese citizens kidnapped by North Korea also joined the protests.
