Jacob Zuma has been sworn is as South Africa's president, in a ceremony watched by thousands.
He is the fourth president since the apartheid era ended, and has promised to follow the policies of reconciliation pursued by Nelson Mandela.
Crowds gathered from the early morning on the lawns in front of the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
Among about 30 world leaders attending the ceremony were Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe and Muammar Gaddafi of Libya.
A topsy-turvy day for the weather saw torrential rain lash the city just before the inauguration.
Some were determined to make good on a traditional Zulu saying when it rains before a big event: "Ilamagu Livumile" or "The ancestors have given their blessing".
The sun finally came out and the 67-year-old made his way to the lawns to address his supporters.
A Zulu praise dancer, a fly-past involving military and civilian aircraft and a 21-gun salute all took place in bright sunshine following his swearing in.
More partying is expected throughout the day, with a concert and live performances.
