A photo released by the semi-official Iranian Fars News Agency shows a mass trial of opposition activists and protesters in Tehran following unrest over President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election in June.

Among those standing trial are Hossein Rassam of the UK embassy in Tehran (L) and Shahaboddin Tabatabaei of the Islamic Iran Participation Front.

French lecturer Clotilde Reiss - reportedly arrested at Tehran airport on 1 July - is accused of spying.

Defendants covering their faces in Tehran courtroom

Some defendants - many of whom are on trial for alleged involvement in rioting and plotting to overthrow the Iranian regime - covered their faces.

Judge Abolqasem Salavati will oversee proceedings during the trial, which has been condemned by the UK's Foreign Office.

The accused listened carefully as the case against them was made - with a female Iranian police officer, sitting second from right, also paying close attention.
