Plans to reform Pakistan judiciary
Lawyers in Pakistan are to release proposals on Saturday outlining ways in which the country's judiciary can be reformed.

The Pakistan Bar Council, the profession's regulatory body, said the main purpose of the proposals would be "to stem the rot" in the judicial system and make progress towards its independence.

Senior lawyers in Pakistan have opposed constitutional amendments brought in by President Pervez Musharraf, which give him a five-year term as head of state and the power to dissolve parliament.

Meanwhile, the Registrar of the Supreme Court has said court premises in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi cannot be used for news conferences making what he described as illegal criticism of the court and judges.

The BBC correspondent in Lahore says the move is a sign of a deepening divide between senior members of the judiciary and lawyers just two days before the reform proposals are to be published.
