India will be holding elections over the course of one month from 16 April.
BBC News asked people from all corners of the world's largest democracy what they would do if they were prime minister.
VINOO VARGHESE ABRAHAM, 28, TRIVANDURAM, KERALA
We see criminals and people involved in murder cases standing for office and holding positions of power intimidating and usurping the property of innocents, involved in extortion in the name of election funds.
Religious intolerance and caste based reservation has been the bane of India since independence.
Many people are ignorant and intolerant of other faiths and some election candidates openly proclaim during the election inflammatory statements which go against the constitution.
We need to ban any organisation which indulges in or endorses communal and ethnic violence.
Terrorist attacks and bomb blasts have become regular occurrences. Nobody feels safe any more to even go to a local train station or a cinema.
The sad part is that even if I were prime minister, I would not have absolute power to bring in all of the legislation and make it into law. Our MPs would veto all. But then this is what I dream of for my India.
