India will be holding elections over the course of one month from 16 April.
BBC News asked people from all corners of the world's largest democracy what they would do if they were prime minister.
SUGANDHA, 27, LECTURER, PATNA, BIHAR
As prime minister first I would like to put focus on the poor and the deprived - people who face the harsh realities of life as soon as they are born.
I would use my teaching abilities and skills to do something to make a difference in their lives.
For the unemployed youth I would make it mandatory for every institution from which they pass out to give proper personality development programmes as well as entrepreneur skills, abilities and the required motivation to take up challenges in their life and career.
Myself being a teacher, my immediate concern has always been to motivate the reticent skills of the people and constantly follow up their gradual development.
So I would also ensure that different government bodies engaged in the developmental process should be leak-proof from the very root to the top.
Above all, I'd urge every citizen of India to use their franchise to elect better candidates for a better, stable government in the country
